Susan Hickman
A career journalist for decades, with the heart of a nomad, my first love is talking to other people all over the world from all fields of pursuit about what they’re doing on the planet. And I am happiest when I’m going places, discovering new paths or retreading old ones. The beauty of our world never gets old for me.
My forte is polishing rough words, providing inspiration to aspiring writers and, in general, turning dust to gold.
I have written articles for daily newspapers across Canada, including the National Post and Toronto Star, government publications including Statistics Canada’s Year Books, as well as corporate newspapers, academic magazines and websites.
I have also worked as managing editor/editor-in-chief for various publications, including clean technology and a diplomatic association.
As the need arises, I run writing workshops or work one-on-one with aspiring writers.
I have an honours bachelor of arts degree with a specialization in English (magna cum laude) from the University of Ottawa. I also studied fine arts at Sir George Williams/Concordia University in Montreal, freelance journalism at the School of Journalism in the United Kingdom, and dance history at the University of Alberta in Edmonton and the School of Dance in Ottawa.
My dance blog is a natural progression from 30 years of critiquing dance. I have witnessed and written about dance of all kinds, presented by companies and soloists from all over the world and my dance columns and reviews have appeared in Dance in Canada magazine, the Edmonton Journal and the Ottawa Citizen and my commentaries on dance have aired on CBC Radio One.
